• Damian Marhulets (Composer, Media-Artist, Sound Fetishist) was born in Minsk in 1980. His musical education has been developing throughout playing oboe and piano towards composition and electroacoustic music, that he studied in Poland and Germany. 2000 – 2009 he lived in Germany, actively taking part in development of the electronic musical scene in Hannover – the city from where he graduated as a composer. Presently Damian lives in Cologne, Germany. Damian Marhulets is a founder and participant of many musical projects spanning contemporary classical music to live-electronic improvisation and multimedia performance. Among others, he established such groups as Sky Scribe, in which he’s been creating music derived from hard-core free-jazz improvisation’s tradition and in collaboration with David Borges and Kostia Rapoport the live-electronic trio dak~ [dak.tilde], which is meant to be a platform covering the overlapping border areas of electronic and electroacoustic music. dak ~ [dak.tilde] trio puts its special interest on creating particular form of improvisation with electronic instruments. Making use of vintage synthesizers extended with new digital instruments, computers and turntables dak ~ [dak.tilde] creates a musical context between old science-fiction sounds and contemporary digital music.
• In 2009 Damian Marhulets wrote his graduation thesis titled „From play back machine to music instrument: Studies on the history of composing with the turntable“. Shortly afterwards he began his new solo project Displaced Meanings, in which he occupied himself with the possibilities of the turntable at various levels. His major interest lie particularly in the new kinds of possibilities offered by digital technology. In place of a typical DJ setup with two turntables Damian Marhulets works only with one turntable extended, however, through other electronic instruments or effect machines and self programmed instruments. The turntable is considered here as a musical instrument, with which one can concentrate on hidden details in trusted musical objects and through which new structural formations and possibilities for meaning can be formed.
• Among others, Damian Marhulets performed at such festivals as Music21 contemporary music Festival, ZKM Festival in Karlsruhe, Re:New digital art Festival in Copehagen, Contemporary Music Fesival in Witten (Germany), PlayWithFire Video Art Festival (NY) and others. His multimedia works were presented at such places as the Sprengel Museum Hannover, Kestnergesellschaft Gallery, RobertDrees Gallery, ArtCenterBerlin and Kunstsaele Gallery Berlin, Philharmonic Hall Essen (Germany), Monkey Town (NY), Issue Project Gallery (NY), Diapason Gallery (NY). He performed at the Music Triennale Cologne 2010 and „New Talents“ Art Biennale Cologne. His works has been broadcasted by NDR Hannover, WDR and Germany Radio. Following his studies he became artistic recidence at ZKM – Center for Art and Media Karlsuhe (Germany), ACROE (Association for the Creation and Research on Expression Tools) in Grenoble, France, and at the Ionian University in Corfu, Greece.
